Last week I had the pleasure of speaking to 650 students at a peer leadership conference on leadership & success. I must say it was an amazing experience. I love being around leaders and inspiring others to take on the role of a leader. I can't exactly put my finger on it but It's just something about helping others that lights a spark in the pit of my stomach that fuels my drive. We are all born with the ability to lead, it's up to use to find the leader within ourselves but for some of us doing so takes time.
Unfortunately there is no pill on the market that you can take and thirty minutes later you suddenly possess the skills of a leader. It's not that easy, and if there is one I'm certain it's not approved by the FDA. But, luckily for you it's not the end of the world, because whether you know it or not the necessary skills needed in order to be leader are already embedded in us all. THAT'S RIGHT! We all possess the skills needed in order to be great leaders, the thing is those skills don't emerge in the natural course of every individuals life. This is not a bad thing it just means that you never went through anything in life where you needed the skills of a leader, but my question to you is who doesn't want to be a leader? We all do.
We all want to be confident, ambitious, strong minded, and driven. We all want the ability to obtain our dreams and be successful. It's okay to aim for the top and if there's anyone who has a problem with you doing so then I advise you to remove them from your circle because as you awaken these skills, they will become another obstacle standing in your way. Now I understand when it comes to business not everyone wants to be in the front seat and are just fine riding in the back but we all want to take lead in some form or fashion.
The main issue that prevents many of us from doing so is FEAR. We're afraid of the many possible outcomes that would lead to failure rather than focusing on the one that makes taking that leap of faith all worth it. You have to be willing to step outside of your comfort zone in order to lead, and charge in the direction of the unknown head first because what lies in the unknown is what we desire most in life.
Nothing happens overnight. Trust me I understand that urge for fast results more than most people. When I went through rehabilitation after my football incident, I wanted nothing more than to wake up and be back on my feet, but working legs cannot be bought online and shipped overnight. It's A Process! You must be patient with the process and take it one step at a time.
